Township History:

History of Marion Township

Marion Township held its first election of the Township June 25, 1833. Its present boundaries are north by Franklin Township, east by Auglaize County, south by Darke County, and west by Granville Township. Chickasaw is the only Incorporated Village; Millport became a part of that Village. St. Rose, Carthagena, Cassella, St. Sebastian, and Maria Stein are villages which are not incorporated. St. John Station became a part of Maria Stein. Steineman Station was not a Village; it was a “flag station,” along the C.H. & D. Railroad, which closed in Mercer County in 1923. The Saint Charles Seminary, Maria Stein Convent and Gruenenwald Convent were part of the C.PP.S. organization. The six villages hosted U.S. Post Offices; Chickasaw and Maria Stein have Post Offices today. Schools, Churches, Cemeteries, and Organizations were established. Marion Township is a strong agribusiness community of family owned farms and businesses. Marion Community Development Organization (MCDO) is a community service organization.
